Very good post orbitgirl. I am really glad that there are others out there trying to make this happen. I envy you for your hands approach to this I wish my health would allow me to do the same. Unfortunately I don't have long left in this time and place I will be moving on shortly. My reason for fighting so hard is not for me its too late for me I am fighting for those I will be leaving behind when I change. I understand that many are against this like scotty we have already bumped heads on this issue but I respect him for standing up amd fighting just as hard for what he thinks is right. That is what makes America great the ability to disagree without bloodshed and sometimes even coming to respect those on the otherside. It is like a good UFC fight or boxing match where both warriors stand toe to toe and fight their heart out unfortunately there will only be one winner. I hope the winner is best for us all. Very good post a true joy to read. Keep up the fight.

"I still have hope that real change can happen. It has to happen because if not, then I feel we ended up with the same old type of politics: fancy rhetoric, empty campaign promises and no real change.."

I hate to tell you this, but that is politics. It is also happening now underneath Obama. Unfortunately, health care is not a right. Just as owning a house or having a job are not rights. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Health care does need to be reformed but not with this Obamacare bill. Why is everyone from the CBO to members of Obama's party against it? 1)The cost and 2) no real plan on how to pay for it (well besides tax everyone..yep...100% of the American taxpayer).

The CBO chief stated today that the health care bill, as it stands, will greatly affect the economy...aka...make it worse!!! As a matter of fact, anything the government has touched ends up costing us trillions of dollars. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/16/AR2009071602242.html

Look at Medicaid/Medicare. Examples of government run health care that is only in the red by $36 trillion dollars. Do you buy their claim that they can keep health care costs down and can "actually pay for it by squeezing wasteful spending out of the current system" as Nancy Pelosi claims? (Note: the CBO said this was NOT TRUE) I don't!

All I can do is judge the bill from collected material. The CBO is a non-partisan group...so I tend to believe them over anything a lying politican claims!

You speak of a "public option." Do you know what the "public option" is? From what I've read, the "public option" is a government health insurance program just like Medicare. It is supposed to provide an alternative to private insurance and make it "competitive."

As you know, the government doesn't compete...it takes over (how is the mortgage lending business doing these days?).

Also, health care isn’t public; it’s personal and private. That is something those that want to depend on the government simply do not understand. If the government can give you health coverage, the government can deny coverage as well...and it will happen if this bill passes.

Enjoyed reading your perspective on the subject.

I agree. Twitter is one of the most effective ways that the Iranian people are bringing the news of their movement and the violence they are experiencing to the world. I hope they prevail in their fight.

Orbitgirl,
I am concerned with “freedom FROM religion” not freedom of religion, and marriage is a religious institution, ergo, I don’t think the state should be in the business of recognizing any marriage. I do believe that any two or even more than two individuals should be allowed to form a legal contract that allots to them the rights currently designated as spousal rights, but marriage should be done in church and the state should not be involved.

Let me qualify my comments a bit here. I never saw her answer, and her response is not my problem. I do not agree with her position, and she is certainly entitled to her opinion, and to her credit she answered honestly. Yet, at the press conference, which aired on cable news this morning, she was upset about the attacks thrown at her. She also felt that people who speak from their heart should not be silenced. What I am saying is that if she wants to give an answer like she had, on television, and she is arguing free speech to what her grandfather fought for, then she has to recognize that the responsibility that comes with free speech is taking the heat of someone else who has the same right and can vehemently disagree. It falls under the same blanket of protection.

My point about separation of Church and State does not come from her comments, but rather when discussing the issue of gay marriage in terms of the law. When it comes to writing a law that bans gay marriage, I feel that religious arguments should not be present because it is a matter for the State, and should not address religion in any way. There is freedom of religion in the country, but that also includes the freedom to not have religious beliefs and in terms of any law that is created and passed, every citizen, regardless of religion has to be taken into account and respected. So when the Right wants to say "God says marriage is between a man and a woman," in terms of a law that would prevent the legalization of gay marriage that is when I tune out because God has no place in the law.

In essence, the separation of Church and State does not involve Prejean's comments. And again, it was her comments at the press conference that were a bit troublesome. Donald Trump can do what he likes. I imagine he likes the attention and the free press. It gets him more business and keeps interest in his organization alive. Either way, I don't care about Prejan or Trump. It is time to move on from this circus.

What did Carrie Prejean say that was unaccountable and irresponsible? She was asked a politically charged question and answered it honestly. Should she have betrayed her convictions and gave some politically-correct "I want world peace" type answer?

Public forums enjoy the protections of free speech, which may include speech offensive to you. Religious speech is most certainly protected and should be equally valued as any other, too many times we forget the very same First Amendment also includes this phrase regarding religion "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". That certainly means one must not keep their religion locked up behind clothes door and you are more than free to turn the channel if someone talking about their religious convictions annoys you.

Those who served and died protecting our freedoms most certainly had Carrie's answer in mind as what is protected speech, though most would probably shake their heads at the disgusting behavior from the Left in response, but that too is tolerated and they are free to look like bigoted fulls.

There is no church/state issue in this. Miss USA is a private organization, not the government. They can choose who has a forum at their events and who doesn't. They can choose what content is present and what isn't.

This is the way it ought to be don't you think?

This is one of the most interesting and informative articles I have read to date. I intend to follow yourlink once I am done commenting. I, too, plead ignorance on the topic but should certainly take the time to become educated. I would like to applaud you on bringing to light a very serious historical issue and detracting from our normal rants and raves about politics and crisies. Very well written and thought provoking.
